Re:
Addressing Raccoon Problem Concerns
The following are the four major actions that the District
is taking towards assisting the community in addressing increasing
concerns about the raccoon population and its possible impact
on children and their health.
1. Continue Efforts to Reduce the Availability of Nesting
Sites for Raccoons
This is done by ensuring that any building access points that
appear to be used by the raccoon population are sealed as quickly
as possible after they have been found.
2. Reducing Possible Food Supply to the Raccoon Population
This is being done by ensuring that all sites have garbage containers,
particularly those containing food products, emptied at the end
of each day and that the garbage dumpsters, in which the garbage
is dumped, have been appropriately closed.
3. Continue to Maintain Sanitary Conditions in Areas that
may be Frequented by Animals Including Raccoons
This is being done by continuing to ensure that areas such as
sandboxes, picnic tables and grass areas frequented by children
are maintained in as clean a condition as possible. Any material
found in these areas of an animal nature is being removed as
promptly as possible and appropriately disposed of.
4. Continue to Encourage Enhanced Personal Hygiene
Primary focuses are:
a. Reminding all students of the need for maintaining
clean hands, particularly before eating, and ensuring that hands
are washed after handling any foreign matter found on the school
grounds.
b. Encouraging students to not handle any foreign materials
on the school grounds that may be animal matter, and
c. Discouraging the use of any potentially unclean surfaces
as a holding place for food materials that are going to be placed
into the mouth.
In addition to the above, we will continue to closely
monitor the situation as it develops within the community and
participate in any additional activities that will assist in
addressing this overall situation.
