PGUSD Testing Data Exceeds State Averages

PGUSD Testing Data Exceeds State Averages

Pacific Grove Unified School District’s scores on statewide testing exceeded the average scores of schools around the state.

California publicly released its statewide averages Monday, Oct. 24, for the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, the California Science Test, and the English Language Proficiency Assessments (ELPAC) of California.

In the English language arts Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) test across all grade levels, 74.5% of PGUSD students met or exceeded the standards, whereas 47.0% of students reached that level statewide.

On the math SBAC test, PGUSD had 57.5% of its students meet or exceed the grade level standard, while the state had 33.5% of students meet or exceed the standard.

Both PGUSD and students across California experienced a drop in performance from pre-pandemic numbers. Both the district and the state showed a 4% decrease in  English language arts. In math, California showed a 7% decline in performance, and PGUSD students dipped by 8%.

The trend of PGUSD students outperforming the state average continues throughout the special populations that the district monitors to build an equitable educational program. The groups measured are economically disadvantaged youth, Hispanic students, English language learners, reclassified fluent English speakers, and students with disabilities.

Students in grades 5, 8, and 11 or 12, also took the California Science Test. 58.0% of PGUSD students met or exceeded the standard compared to 29.5% of students statewide. California students experienced only a .5% decrease in performance from pre-COVID levels, while PGUSD students actually increased their score by 6.5%.

Results from the ELPAC showed PGUSD had 26.5% of its students reach the level where they are eligible to be reclassified fluent English proficient. Statewide, 15.5% of students reached this standard.

PGUSD cautioned those viewing test results to understand that state testing represents one snapshot of student performance at a particular time of the year. To gain an accurate picture of student performance, the district uses multiple measures including locally administered standardized tests, classroom performance, and perhaps most importantly, teacher assessment to evaluate student progress.

School and district staff will use the data from statewide assessments as a contributing factor for identifying students who would benefit academic intervention. This data also helps determine the distribution of resources throughout the district.
