Important Notice to Parents/Guardians: Synthetic Drug Awareness

Important Notice to Parents/Guardians: Synthetic Drug Awareness

In compliance with Education Code 48985.5, Pacific Grove Unified School District (PGUSD) is committed to informing families about the serious and growing dangers associated with synthetic drugs. We ask all parents and guardians to please review the following important information:
  • Synthetic drugs, such as fentanyl, are extremely dangerous when not prescribed by a physician and can lead to serious health complications or death.
  • Counterfeit pills may look like common prescription medications but can contain lethal substances such as fentanyl, even in small doses.
  • Social media platforms are increasingly being used as a way to market and sell these dangerous substances to young people, often disguised or misrepresented.

PGUSD is dedicated to keeping students safe and informed. As part of this effort, this information is posted on the district and school websites and is included in our annual parent/guardian notifications.

What You Can Do:
  • Talk to your child about the dangers of drug use, especially counterfeit pills and synthetic opioids.
  • Monitor and stay engaged with your child’s online and social media activity.
  • Encourage open, honest communication and let them know you are a safe person to come to with concerns.

Together, we can help keep our students informed, safe, and supported.
Update from April 2024

Update from April 2024

Dear PGUSD Staff and Families,

We are pleased to invite you to participate in our continued NARCAN distribution through PGUSD. As part of our ongoing efforts to promote health and safety within our community, we are continuing to make NARCAN available to help combat opioid overdoses. If you would like to participate, you may pick up a dose of NARCAN at any PGUSD school site; simply contact your child’s front office.

As previous district distributions were successful within the district over the past two years, we are excited to extend this ongoing opportunity to our Pacific Grove staff and community. NARCAN, also known as naloxone, is a medication used to rapidly reverse opioid overdose. It can save lives when administered promptly and correctly.
Prior to distribution, participants are encouraged to complete a short training video that is available on our district safety web page under our drug prevention page. We strongly encourage all PGUSD staff and community members to take advantage of this opportunity to receive NARCAN training and a dose of the medication. Your participation could help save a life.

If you have any questions or require further information, please do not hesitate to contact Barbara Martinez, Principal Pacific Grove Adult Education at 831-646-6580.
Thank you for your commitment to the health and safety of our community.

Sincerely,

Dr. Linda Adamson, PGUSD Superintendent of Schools
